If you’re a minion fan or have a minion in your life, then this easy and fun cake recipe will make for the perfect party dessert. These adorable little henchmen from the Despicable Me movie are sure to be a hit with your kids.
The recipe below makes a three-dimensional Minion cake and is super easy to make. You’ll need a boxed cake mix, vanilla buttercream frosting and some extra ingredients to create the Minion’s overalls, goggles and prisoner uniform.
Start by baking the cakes in a greased oven and then letting them cool completely before you can start decorating them. If you don’t have a cake pan, you can use an ordinary large sheet cake and cut it into an oblong shape for the Minion’s body.
You’ll also need a greased rolling pin and some white fondant. Roll the fondant to a thickness of about 1/16 inch and then cut out a circle with a cup or round cookie cutter. Set the round piece on the top quarter of the body and press it in place.
Once the body is iced, cover the cake with yellow roll out icing that has been sprinkled with icing sugar to stop it sticking to the surface of the cake. Chill the cake for about 10 minutes until the icing sets.
Next, add the goggles by piping black stars over the top of the cake. You can also add a dot of black buttercream inside the goggles for a bit more dimension.
If you’re a fan of the movie, you can make this 3D Minion cake even more realistic by adding a little bit of edible food coloring to the buttercream frosting. If you have a good quality gel food coloring, you’ll be able to get really vibrant colors that won’t fade in the sunlight.
The recipe below is for a 3D Minion cake that is made using a 9 x 13 inch sheet cake. This cake is a great way to show off your skill at cake making and it will be a huge hit at the party!
Prepare an acetate sheet and an offset spatula. Spread a thin layer of chocolate on the bottom of each cake.
Once the cakes are cooled, you can make a simple buttercream frosting and ice them. You’ll need to color the frosting a little bit with yellow and blue gel food coloring, as well as black and gray.
You can also pipe details onto the buttercream with a small piping bag fitted with a piping tip. If you have a picture of a Minion, you can use that as a template to make decorating easier.
This icing can be colored with either water or food coloring, but you’ll want to choose a lighter shade to prevent the icing from getting too dark or thick. This will help keep the design from becoming too hard to see on the finished cake.
To finish your icing, you’ll need to pipe the black and white stripes on the shoulder straps of the prisoner uniform, as well as the goggles, the prisoner hat and the arms of the Minion. You can also use a few scrap pieces of the cake to create a pill box style prisoner hat.
