Tulips are the first flowers to appear in many areas of the world as spring gets underway. They are popular as both cut flowers and garden plants. They are also a favorite of rabbits, squirrels and other animals.

Whether you have space in your garden or not, you can still enjoy the beauty of tulips with this DIY felt tulip project. Whether you want to make a beautiful floral arrangement for Mother’s Day or just want a touch of spring decor in your home, this felt tulip tutorial is the perfect place to start!

To get started, cut three 2 1/2-inch tall by 1 1/2-inch wide tulip petals from green felt. Run a bead of hot glue along the bottom center of each petal and adhere them to the stem. Repeat with the remaining two petal pieces. You can leave the petals slightly open to give them a more natural look and feel, or you can fold them in half and flatten them for a more structured look.

Use sharp scissors to cut a fringe from the long side of one piece of yellow felt. This will help you create the center of your tulip and also allow you to attach the felt-covered tulip stem to it. Once you have a fringe that is long enough, glue the fringe to the felt-covered tulip stem. You can also add a little more hot glue to secure it better.

Next, use a sharp pair of scissors to cut a few 1/2-inch slits on the long side of the yellow fringe piece you just created. This will help you roll the fringe around the tulip center, making it look more like an actual flower. If you are using a wire to make your tulip center, you will need to wrap the fringe around it before placing it on the felt-covered tulip stem.

You can also choose to add some tulip leaves, which will also help your project look more realistic. I used a few small pieces of green felt to make the leaves but you could use just one larger piece if you wanted to create a more elaborate looking tulip.

Finally, you can add a wire to the top of the felt-covered tulip stem for extra support. I used a thinner wire but you can also use a stronger wire for a more sturdy tulip stem.

If you decide to go with a wire, make sure it is strong and that you don’t bend or break it. This will help prevent it from snapping the stem. If you do not have a strong wire, you may need to glue the felt-covered stem to the wire before adding the leaves. This will also make the wire easier to manipulate and make your tulip look more lifelike.
